Package 23 — Basic Risk Assessment and Selecting Controls

R380,00

Identify hazards and affected people, compare controls and distinguish a proposed risk reduction from measures that are actually in place.

Basic Risk Assessment and Selecting Controls

Use explicit teaching records to compare elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative measures and PPE. A fictional task at Site S23 tests whether a lower proposed score justifies starting before its supporting controls are installed. Learners then examine ownership, timing, verification and the exact scope of a release.

Value for your training programme

Supports risk-assessment literacy without presenting a score as a universal permission threshold or a substitute for competent assessment.

Suggested audience

Construction workers and supervisors contributing observations to task planning.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the source of harm and distinguish it from the likelihood and possible seriousness of harm.
  • Include other trades, cleaners, visitors and anyone else who could be exposed to the task.
  • Compare elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative measures and PPE without treating them as interchangeable.
  • Distinguish proposed controls and estimated scores from controls that are in place, checked and covered by a defined release.
  • Record the hazard, affected people, controls, owner and timescale; review when conditions or control effectiveness change.

Seven-section learning path

  1. Understand the assessment task
  2. Inspect assessment and control cases
  3. Compare current and proposed risk
  4. Choose controls in the right order
  5. A control plan at Site S23
  6. Record, verify and review
  7. Check your learning

How learners work through the package

Learners read the supplied workplace conditions, examine six observation cases, answer practice questions and follow a branching scenario. They then complete an untimed ten-question assessment across five learning outcomes and review explanatory feedback. The package learning threshold is 80%; it is not a competence or legal-certification standard.

Learning controls and reporting

UK and US English browser narration, playback controls and transcripts accompany the written UK-English content. Text enlargement, high contrast, reduced motion, keyboard-operable controls and fullscreen support are included. Fullscreen and voice availability depend on the receiving environment.

Learners can review results, outcome scores, response explanations and optional reflection notes, with print, JSON and CSV outputs. Authorised facilitators use the receiving Moodle’s SCORM attempt, interaction and objective reports. A consolidated cross-course reporting dashboard is not included.

Delivery and requirements

A standalone SCORM 1.2 learning package intended for upload into your own Moodle site. A Moodle course, permission to add activities, appropriate settings and receiving-site testing are required. Hosting, enrolment administration, practical training, accreditation, update entitlement and support are not included unless the final product offer explicitly says otherwise. Confirm the product’s permitted use, licence and included files before purchase.

Important scope

This module provides awareness and decision practice. It does not qualify you to approve a construction risk assessment, design protection, operate plant or release work. Follow the actual site assessment, task method, supervision, permits and emergency arrangements. Fictional scores are not real-site ratings or permission to work.
