Excavation and Underground-Service Hazard Awareness
Consider collapse, edge loading, water, protection and possible service damage through separate cases. The Site X28 scenario begins when a team encounters an unexpected line not shown on the available plan. Learners must communicate from a safe position and preserve excavation restrictions even when a separate surface route is opened.
Value for your training programme
Supports awareness at the interface between planning, surface access and specialist excavation work without authorising digging, service locating or rescue.
Suggested audience
Construction ground-level staff and supervisors coordinating work near excavations.
Learning objectives
- Recognise collapse, falling material, edge loading, access and atmospheric concerns without judging safety from depth or appearance.
- Recognise the limits of plans, surface marks, locator results and visual identification before any ground disturbance.
- Recognise when rain, a new work area, an unexpected service or disturbed protection requires a fresh review.
- Distinguish surface access, fall prevention, ground support and authorised specialist work rather than treating one control as permission for all activities.
- Communicate facts and urgency, request the appropriate response and apply only the named, current release.
Seven-section learning path
- Understand excavation and service hazards
- Inspect excavation and service situations
- Compare earlier information with current evidence
- Keep excavation and service controls effective
- An unexpected service at Site X28
- Report concerns and retain restrictions
- Check your learning
How learners work through the package
Learners read the supplied workplace conditions, examine six observation cases, answer practice questions and follow a branching scenario. They then complete an untimed ten-question assessment across five learning outcomes and review explanatory feedback. The package learning threshold is 80%; it is not a competence or legal-certification standard.
Learning controls and reporting
UK and US English browser narration, playback controls and transcripts accompany the written UK-English content. Text enlargement, high contrast, reduced motion, keyboard-operable controls and fullscreen support are included. Fullscreen and voice availability depend on the receiving environment.
Learners can review results, outcome scores, response explanations and optional reflection notes, with print, JSON and CSV outputs. Authorised facilitators use the receiving Moodle’s SCORM attempt, interaction and objective reports. A consolidated cross-course reporting dashboard is not included.
Delivery and requirements
A standalone SCORM 1.2 learning package intended for upload into your own Moodle site. A Moodle course, permission to add activities, appropriate settings and receiving-site testing are required. Hosting, enrolment administration, practical training, accreditation, update entitlement and support are not included unless the final product offer explicitly says otherwise. Confirm the product’s permitted use, licence and included files before purchase.
Important scope
This is awareness and decision practice, not an excavation inspection, utility survey, permit or permission to dig or enter. It does not authorise excavation work, service locating, support design, isolation, pumping, repairs or rescue. Follow the actual site plan, competent assessments, service-owner information and authorised procedures.
