Materials Handling and Workstation Design
Compare manufacturing work arrangements rather than judging a task solely by the weight of an item. Learners review adjustability, presentation of materials and the suitability of mechanical assistance. A product change at Station M14 tests whether a different carton, work height or unavailable lift table invalidates the earlier arrangement.
Value for your training programme
Offers concrete prompts for worker consultation and task redesign discussions, without setting a universal posture, lifting limit or workstation dimension.
Suggested audience
Production operators, assembly teams and supervisors reviewing task arrangements.
Learning objectives
- Consider task, load, individual capability and environment rather than judging a handling task by weight alone.
- Recognise opportunities to reduce excessive reach, awkward posture, repetition, force and unnecessary movement through design changes.
- Check that a handling aid is suitable for the load, route, condition and user before relying on it.
- Recognise the value of adjustability, reach zones and task variation rather than one fixed setup for everyone.
- Stop and review changed tasks, equipment or symptoms rather than continuing with an unsuitable arrangement.
Seven-section learning path
- Plan handling and workstation tasks
- Inspect handling and workstation situations
- Assess task, load, person and environment
- Improve the task and workstation
- A product change at Station M14
- Report concerns and verify the change

How learners work through the package
Learners read the supplied workplace conditions, examine six observation cases, answer practice questions and follow a branching scenario. They then complete an untimed ten-question assessment across five learning outcomes and review explanatory feedback. The package learning threshold is 80%; it is not a competence or legal-certification standard.
Learning controls and reporting
UK and US English browser narration, playback controls and transcripts accompany the written UK-English content. Text enlargement, high contrast, reduced motion, keyboard-operable controls and fullscreen support are included. Fullscreen and voice availability depend on the receiving environment.
Learners can review results, outcome scores, response explanations and optional reflection notes, with print, JSON and CSV outputs. Authorised facilitators use the receiving Moodle’s SCORM attempt, interaction and objective reports. A consolidated cross-course reporting dashboard is not included.
Delivery and requirements
A standalone SCORM 1.2 learning package intended for upload into your own Moodle site. A Moodle course, permission to add activities, appropriate settings and receiving-site testing are required. Hosting, enrolment administration, practical training, accreditation, update entitlement and support are not included unless the final product offer explicitly says otherwise. Confirm the product’s permitted use, licence and included files before purchase.
Important scope
This learning resource provides awareness and decision practice about manual materials handling, mechanical aids and workstation design. It does not certify a task as ergonomically safe, set universal lifting limits, diagnose a health condition or authorise equipment use. Follow the receiving organisation’s task-specific risk assessment, equipment instructions, training and occupational-health arrangements.
